Utica, New York is basking in the international spotlight as it plays host to the IIHF Women’s World Championship. The tournament, which began on April 2nd and runs through mid-April, has brought together top female hockey players from ten countries to compete at the state-of-the-art Nexus Center.
This is a significant moment for Utica, with the under-two-year-old Nexus Center finding itself on the global stage. Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente expressed his surprise and delight at how quickly the venue has attracted such a prestigious event.
The excitement isn’t limited to the arena. The entire Mohawk Valley is embracing the competition. Businesses are decked out in tournament colors, restaurants are highlighting local specialties, and Oneida County Tourism is offering a “Discover Utica” trail to help visitors explore the area. Tourists are encouraged to sample local favorites like Utica greens and chicken riggies, with Babe’s at Harbor Point being a recommended destination.
Oneida County Tourism President Sarah Foster Calero is enthusiastic about the positive atmosphere and is urging visitors to experience all the Mohawk Valley has to offer. She highlighted the new “Discover Utica” trail, the Utica Zoo, the free New York Energy Zone, and the diverse culinary scene as must-sees for visitors.
The celebration extends beyond sightseeing. The Subaru World Championship Village is providing free entertainment with live music and games for all ages.
