In an interview on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the $60.8 billion aid package approved by the U.S. over the weekend, stating that it would significantly strengthen Ukraine’s armed forces and potentially lead to “victory” as the country continues to defend itself against Russia[1].
Zelenskyy, speaking through an interpreter, emphasized the importance of swiftly delivering this aid to soldiers on the frontlines, rather than waiting for several more months. He urged the Senate to expedite the process, highlighting the urgent need for long-range weapons and air defense systems, which are currently the military’s top priorities.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill on Saturday, following the Senate’s approval of a massive aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, as well as increased border security funding. President Joe Biden echoed Zelenskyy’s sentiment, urging the Senate to send the package to his desk for signing into law.
The Ukrainian President dismissed criticisms that the U.S. has invested too much in the conflict, stating, “Americans are, first and foremost, safeguarding freedom and democracy across Europe.” He added, “The U.S. Army no longer needs to engage in protecting NATO countries. Ukrainians are doing that. All the civilized world is providing is ammunition, and I think that’s a wise decision.”
The newfound support from the U.S. comes as Ukraine’s military supplies have dwindled, forcing the military to withdraw from the key eastern city of Avdiivka in February. Gen. Christopher Cavoli, commander of the European Command, warned earlier this month that the disparity in artillery fire between Russian and Ukrainian forces could worsen without additional aid.
Zelenskyy’s message is clear: the new U.S. aid package will provide a much-needed boost to Ukraine’s military capabilities, potentially turning the tide in the ongoing conflict with Russia. As the war continues, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a swift and decisive victory for Ukraine.
